Saturday Morning at Gulliver’s

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I thought life would have slowed down after the write-a-thon ended.  Not a chance.  The bookstore is down three people in the café, which by necessity is now being staffed by book clerks.

I worked the front counter for a few hours this morning.  It was fun.  It’s been a long time since I rang up customers and did used book trades.  Maria and I went on a rampage around the counter, cleaning up and reorganizing.  There is always so much to do in the front of the store.  Four hours went by fast.

I saw people that I haven’t seen in months, or even years.  Several expressesd surprise at seeing me.  I think they thought I had left, since most of the time I’m chained back in the office, slaving away at the computer.

Dinah’s vet walked in the door with an armload of books from the cart outside.  “I hate this place,” she said, set the books down on the counter, and went browsing for more.

“Try working here,” is always my response; working in a bookstore is dangerous.  I didn’t ring up her sale, but I don’t think she made it out for less than $50.

It was a nice change of pace from the usual routine.  That’s going to start up again Monday morning.  But until then, I’m going to catch up on my reading and my writing.

Gullie’s Website

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Well it has been a crazy two weeks on the storefront.  The Bargain Annex titles are incorporated into the newly renovated store and the website is operational.  It’s not perfect, but it’s operational.  Bookstore time started to bleed into personal time on the project and I’ve still got a lot to learn about Dreamweaver & Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, & etc.  I’m going to try to get that blog going this week, so there will probably be less Bookstore Confidential postings in the future.  Check out all the hard work done by Kendra & edited by yours truly.  www.gullivers-books.com

Empty Shelves & Piles of Books

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

emptyshelvesWe are in the midst of a massive overhaul of the store.  Remaindered books from the Bargain Annex are being worked into the appropriate sections in the front of the store.  All of the new children’s books, including Alaskana are being moved to their new home in what used to be the Bargain Annex.  Cooking will also end up in that room, as well as CD’s and DVD’s.  I’d like to see some space for the graphic novels and manga and a large display table in what I am now referring to as Kiddie Land.  All the moving means that we’re purging our sections and a ton of great books are being discounted.  Come on in while the selection is fresh!

Backroom Battle Book sales are steady, we didn’t have the usual October drop-off and are now sold out of the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade lists.  We’ve got more books arriving daily.  It’s Groundhog’s Day all over again, shipping and billing out partial orders one after the other.  Job security, I guess.

It’s not even Halloween yet and Christmas merch is starting to arrive.  Advent calendars and cards.  And there’s not even snow on the ground yet.  How weird is that?  We had a couple of inches in late September but all that melted and it hasn’t come back.  I saw a snowshoe hare yesterday.  It was pure white standing out against the brown fallen leaves and treetrunks.  The animals know what the season is, even if the weather doesn’t.  I bet the ptarmagin are white too.  If the snow doesn’t come soon the predators won’t have a problem finding their prey.

Unplug the Fax Machine

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

78hsbb3456bbThis last week has been one ‘Groundhog’s Day’ after another.

I’ve been trying to keep my desk caught up so that Maria isn’t stuck at it for the week that I’m gone.

But the Battle Book orders have been coming in daily.  So I’ve been pulling books and packing them up and shipping them out.

For Maria to be safe at her desk (and not chained to mine) I thought it best to unplug the fax machine.  Unfortunately that wasn’t an option.  I got Elisa trained on mailouts and other back-room sales so she can be of some assistance to Maria.  And those are the last thoughts I’m going to have about the bookstore for the next seven days.  I’m on vacation!

Goodbye to Tina & Dinah Loves Chocolate

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

byetinaToday was Tina’s last day at the store.  She’s heading back to Oregon with her family and they’re going to miss our wicked winter wonderland.snowycar (For all you Silent Outsiders, I woke up this morning to snow on my car, gasp!)  I’m going to miss Tina’s constant cheery smile and all the hard work she puts in behind the used book counter.  I’m going to miss her continual bustling around the store, always with a purpose, a task.  Bye Tina!  Have a safe trip home & keep in touch.

Other store news: we’re doing some rearranging.  It looks like the room that used to be all Alaskan books, which became the Bargain Annex full of remaindered books, is going to turn into the Children’s Paradise I’ve always wanted it to be.  Yay!  There are semi-organized stacks of books everywhere.bookstacks (It kinda looks like all my books at home.)  We still have a lot of shelving and fixture measurements to work out, but I’m looking forward to the change.  It was a busy, busy day but I’m finally feeling caught up at my desk after almost a week of sickness.

When I got home from work today I knew something was wrong when Dinah didn’t meet me at the door.  And she wasn’t sleeping on her bed in the office.  Why?  Because in my rush to get out the door this morning with all my medications I forgot to put the gate up to keep her downstairs.  So where was this pampered pooch all day long?  The princess spent a relaxing day upstairs eating bonbons and lounging on the master’s bed.

forgottengateThere were brown streaks all over the carpeting.  Nope, not poop, it was chocolate.  It’s a good thing Nick bought that carpet shampooer last month.  Pulled that out and shampooed the upstairs.  I called the vet and let him know she’d had about eight ounces of chocolate including the wrappers.  (Less than half a bag of those assorted Hershey mini chocolate bars.  She had to go behind the couch and dig them out of a knitting bag, it’s not like they were left out on the couch or end table.  She was on a mission for chocolate.)  A dog her size (150 lbs) can ingest about two pounds of chocolate before poisoning sets in.  So I guess that’s good news.  He warned me that she’s going to have diarrhea.  Boy was he right.

dinahfunnyfaceSince Dinah was outside, roaming the yard and expelling chocolate from her bowels, I packed in my meager container garden.  The flowers were starting to die and my peppers never fully matured this year.  Again.  Last summer it was all rain and no sun, this summer it was all smoke from forest fires and no sun.  I’m not going to plant any peppers next summer and the weather will be beautiful.  The garden is clear, and Dinah is sleeping off her chocolate hangover, the carpets are shampooed, and now I can finally get to work writing.

PNBA Fall 09

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Took yesterday to recover from the trip and book overdose and now, Silent Readers, I will divulge the details of the PacNW Booksellers Assoc. Fall Trade Show, 2009.holidayinnsignElisa and I arrived in Portland Wednesday morning and had a day to ourselves before the fun started.  After a short nap, her sister (Hillary) and sister’s friend (Ian) came to the hotel and took us out for a night on the town, as in, a night spent browsing Powell’s and eating pizza at Rocco’s.powellssignpowellsaislescifipillar

(The sci-fi writers’ pillar at Powell’s; I will, one day, add my signature to it.)

Thursday was full of educational sessions, a pretense of business before the orgy of books.  I sat next to Brenda Cooper during the one on the Gen-Z Reader.  The third book in her Silver Ship series, Wings of Creation, was featured during lunch.  I felt like a complete dweeb after talking to Nick that night and learned that she was the coauthor of Building Harlequin’s Moon, one of five books currently sitting on the nightstand.  I suppose I was blinded by Larry Niven’s name on the cover.

cheriepriestThe nightcapper Thursday was a party of books.  Elisa and I both stuffed our messenger bags to bursting with cookbooks, picture books, and other excellent titles.  I’m especially looking forward to reading Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, check her out in her steampunk costume!

Friday was a busy day grabbing more books from the trade show floor and anticipating the Author Feast.  I volunteered to be Ken Scholes’ escort for the event and happily monopolized him, before and after dinner, talking about books and writing and twins.  I’m going to reread Lamentation before moving on to book 2 in the Psalms of Isaak, Canticle. kenscholes&meSaturday morning was spent configuring books in suitcases.  (It was successful, we each had two bags, weighing between 42 & 47 pounds each.  Boxing and shipping Battle Books has paid off at last with a semi-reliable judgment of weights.)  Elisa and I checked out of our room and went to the airport.

Travel time was spent reading.  I started and finished The Fat of the Land by Langdon Cook, Kendra Kandlestar & the Shard from Greeve by Lee Edward Fodi, and The River by Mary Jane Beaufrand.  I’ll be passing all three books on to others and wanted to get through them before they left my possession.  Yes, despite the deep temptation to horde all my free books, I will be sharing with friends, family, and coworkers.  But not before I read them all first!

A Week at My Desk-Friday

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Today went by in a blur.  An early start, special orders, Big Bro checklist, the usual.  More training with Mike, we shelved some books and then worked on special orders for a while.  He’s catching on pretty quick, always a good thing.  Then in the afternoon Dave, Kendra, and I talked about the website and I cleared my desk away for the weekend.  That’s how I like my Fridays, quick and uncomplicated.  And the Aleutian Crab Chowder was everything it always is.  Now for a relaxing weekend and two more days of work before I get to take off to Portland, OR for the PNBA Fall Trade Show.

A Week at My Desk-Thursday

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Started at a quarter after six again this morning, but today I was the only early bird.  Boss-man David, the owner, who’s usually awake as early as I am, slept in and didn’t show up until seven thirty.  Did the usual morning special orders and Big Brother checklist and research.  I pointedly ignored the mountain of boxes stacking up at the receiving counter.2breceivedI planned on starting them if there was time, but there were just too many mistakes to correct.

Store opened at nine and I went through the opening checklist with Mike.  He’s picking up everything quickly, a fast study.  Hope he sticks around.  We worked on some special orders together and rang up some customers.  When Elisa got in, and after she got over the mountain of boxes waiting for her, we did some training on non-book receiving, a whole big box of pirate merchandise from Accoutrements.

We’ve got gianormous pirate devil duckies, eye patches, stickers, tattoos, fingerpuppets, etc.  We’re going to make a fun display tomorrow.  Cap’n Slappy will be in the store on International Talk Like a Pirate Day and I can just tell it’s going to be a wild time.  Tomorrow morning I should have time to finish whatever receiving Elisa doesn’t get to.

I’m on day 11 in my 12-day working streak and I’m entering zombie-mode. The lights are on and it may appear someone is home, but believe me, that is not the case, I just hope I’m training Mike right.  Tomorrow is Friday, day 12, and Aleutian Crab Chowder day in the café again, it’s my new favorite soup.

A Week at My Desk-Wednesday

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Early start at a quarter after six, nothing was added to my desk overnight, it was just as I had left it, always a nice feeling.  Worked on the special orders, as I do every morning.  A customer ordered twenty different Berenstain Bears books and looking through the list was nostalgic.  Ah, childhood reading, I think my favorite was Berenstain Bear’s New Baby.  As the oldest, I had to make room for siblings and share mom & dad after having them to myself.

After my sentimental start to the day, I boxed up the rest of the Battle Book orders and moved all the boxes outside.boxesThen started prepping for training, printing out a copy of the training checklist and setting up a user account for the computers and a customer code for shopping.  That didn’t take me long, so I cleaned out the red basket of problem-child books that have been damaged and discounted those that needed discounting.

The New Dude, Mike, showed up right on time and for the rest of the day, except for my half-hour lunch and his half-hour lunch, was training.  Today was a nice break from the usual hectic back-room circus.  No new orders came in while I was in the office, could it be that they’re giving me a short reprieve while I get this training done?

We got through the cash register training today and rang up some sales, I think tomorrow I’ll start on the special order training.  Get through the material fast so when I leave next week for the PNBA Fall Show he won’t have too many questions.

A Week at My Desk-Tuesday

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

This morning I got to work at six fifteen again and checked over the special orders, researched all the titles left over from yesrterday, edited the new discount cards, and did the Big Brother checklist.  There weren’t a whole lot of mistakes, so it was a good morning.messydesk

From eight thirty to nine fifteen I called in orders to publishers.  The new guy, Mike, showed up at nine and Dave went over the paperwork with him and told him to come back tomorrow; I’ll be starting his training tomorrow.  For the rest of my day I worked on boxing up and sending out Battle Book orders.  I took a fifteen minute lunch at eleven thirty and a fifteen minute break from Battle Books at about one to call customers and let them know when their books would arrive.

So it was all Battle Books all day long, 39 packages, 520 pounds, totaling a few thousand dollars in merchandise.  At least there were very few interruptions.  I think I’m in a good spot for starting the training tomorrow.  Hopefully this newbie will catch on as quickly as the last one did.
